Small Triumphs

March 31st, 2011 at 03:48 am

Though I was running on fumes, I made it through all three classes today. I had visiting grad students in each, so they got me at not my best.

After teaching, I ran to two grocery stores and got all the week's deals, some of which were very good. One nearby store was closing out all their premium jams and jellies for 50% off. You know the ones--the St Dalfour (?), Bonne Maman, and those types. DH, my stereotypical English husband, adores jam. I bought 8 jars. The McCann Irish oatmeal was also half off, so I stocked up on that as well. One of them didn't ring up as half off, so the customer service worker checked, and then gave it to me for free! Free Fancy Jam! I think only I could get that excited about something sort of mundane. No, come to think of it, DH was also thrilled.

Picked up DD at play practice after school with a few minutes to spare, so I thought I'd have a root around in the lost and found bin where three (amazing!) of her winter hats and one hand-knit mitten turned up.

It has indeed been a day of small triumphs.
Now a good night's sleep, and I'll be well on the road to wellness!

Triply impressive - saved lots of money, on the items that are especially meaningful, despite being sick. Well done, enjoy that jam and oatmeal. Formal tea, anyone?

Hahaha, there's a ton more types of jam (including Bonne Maman!) since a Brit moved into my house, too. And golden syrup, and Coleman's English Mustard, and HP brown sauce ... our condiments cupboard and fridge shelves are constantly overflowing since he got here. Wink

ceejay: It's pretty funny, isn't it? I always think of a scene in Gosford Park where a guy is huddled in the kitchen eating jam from the jar. But I draw the line at those Heinz beans (from the blue tin)on toast. Ugh.

Baselle: Your trip to Vietnam sounded fab. What an adventure.

I love the beans-on-toast thing! And the full English breakfast. And cottage pie, and Cornish pasty, and we even do a vegan version of fish 'n' chips. (They know their starchy fatty comfort foods.) However, I'm completely revolted by Branston Pickle. *shudder* The only thing worse than the taste is the smell.

And we love Branston pickle! My American sister-in-law won't let it in the house, but a ploughman's with Stilton and Branston pickle--and a nice pint. Heaven. I think it is one of those things you either love or hate. I served it up on biscuits to my Brit Lit students last Christmas and one girl left the room gagging.
