Home Again Blues

July 17th, 2012 at 04:09 pm

Despite the cool rainy weather, we had a wonderful time in the UK--even enjoying a two-hour Harry Potter walk in the rain. DH's family is all doing well, but man, Britain just gets more and more expensive. I read several stories on the cost of living rising almost 30% in the past four years. We economized where we could, cooking lots of meals in the cottage, but London, despite my brilliant new Oyster card for transportation, was a budget buster. I'm in a fight with hotels.com about the extra bed charge in the hotel, and despite eating a fair amount of supermarket food and using the hotel fridge, I hate to think how much we spent on food.

There was good news with my Study Abroad folks. I enjoyed meeting them, and they've sent me a list of faculty accommodation alternatives. I get a health club membership and a transportation card too.

Transportation now that we're home has run into a major issues: DH's car died yesterday on the way to work. It's old, but I thought we'd get another year out of it. But the mechanic says it's a blown head gasket and that's all she wrote. We're trying hard to figure out how much to spend on a used car that he mainly drives to the bus stop. For a brief moment, I wondered if we could do with one car, but my evening classes make that almost impossible. So--do we drain the emergency fund, or buy a less-expensive car that may only have a couple years in it?

What did you pay for airfare, if I may ask? I'm looking around for our UK trip next year, and wondering if $1K per person is a reasonable expectation anymore.

Sometimes you get more out of a used car than you think. Do you know of anyone selling a car that would give you some peace of mind about condition? Or know a mechanic that might be selling a good used car? Good luck making that decision.

For a car driven that little, I would go cheap!

    Welcome home, we missed you!

I am wrestling with nearly the same dilemma. I am leaning toward cheap (eight years old). Glad you had a great time and managed a trip before the Olympics. What borough(s) did you stay at in London?

I've bought a couple of $1k-ish cars that lasted MANY years. They were bought from relatives - so basically high mileaged but very well maintaned. I'd keep my ears open for friends/colleagues selling cars. Next step up would be a "granny car" - keep an eye out for less popular models. Will be priced low though maybe barely driven and almost "like new." $5k-ish can buy you a pretty nice car. Called granny cars because they may have been mostly garaged for 7-10 years until owner got bored and wanted a new car - usually a granny or a housewive without a commute. {OF course, this is my experience in an area where "barely used cars" tend do flood the market. Regions may vary}. You would only get these deals from a private party.

Hey! I'm glad to hear from everybody! I missed you guys, and thought about how you'd all be groaning at prices. ceejay: I can only find 1k each in the very off months like February and early November. We flew Virgin(which I really like) from Chicago and paid (gulp) $1200. I could find nothing cheaper when I booked, but we had to be careful with timing so I could make my evening class. I think MSP is more expensive usually?

We're used to staying in Pimlico and Lambeth and around there, but stayed in Kensington this time. The tube stop was close, but the Circle Line isn't the most convenient. We like the bus better, and spent happy times in the front seat on the upper level. DD loves it. Kensington was the first place I ever stayed in London almost 20 years ago, so it was fun to be somewhere else. My Study Abroad lodgings next winter will probably be at a "scholars' residence" in Notting Hill so I wanted to take a peek around that area again.

I think we're leaning toward a cheap granny car too. DH's old one was from the 80+-year-old mom of a friend. Another Buick seems almost inevitable...

More on UK prices and how folks are trying to cope with them later...

Our Brit friends eat totally differently with emphasis on root veggies; ham is sliced so thin you can see through it!
Many types of cabbage, squash, potato/yams, turnips, parsnips, celeriac etc.

Yikes, OK. Maybe $1K apiece is dreaming, then. I wouldn't mind going at a weird time or day or even having one stop in order to get it under, though. I saw a tantalizing $850 offer for leaving on a Thurs, coming back on a Fri, but when I clicked on it the price had gone up nearly $200 per ticket.

I do have a plan to try and get some bonus miles credit cards, combine them and try to get one ticket using those. All I want is for my airfare to come in at $4K or less, so we have money for fun and, you know, food.
