Maybe Better News?

June 24th, 2014 at 06:26 pm

I received an estimate from the periodontist about the insurance charges. I was thinking it would be 5K since that's last time's damage. But they seem to believe insurance will cover all but $500. Do I believe that? Not sure. If it were true, I'd be happy and relieved.

But now I'm a little stuck. I'd happily start investigating bathroom remodeling if I was $4500 richer. But I suspect I won't know for sure until the surgery at the end of July. And it would be fabulous to have the bathroom done before school begins in the fall.

DD is off camping with church until the end of the week, and it's quiet and empty here. I hope to get a lot of work done while she's gone, and need to start planning her birthday events.

My last-minute class is actually over tonight, but I start a literature class next week. I've taught that one a dozen times, so I'm prepared. Man, the public schools here do an amazingly horrible job of teaching writing. It's such a critical skill, and it's depressing to see how poorly the 'average" student emerges. Have any of you seen or are planning to see that new movie on student loans? Now there's a depressing fact. The NYT magazine had a great article on the situation last week; I recommend it.

Fingers crossed for a frugally successful dental procedure! Smile
I had one son away at horseback camp this past weekend, with younger daughter at pom camp all day Saturday and Sunday. It was strangely quiet and one of the at home kids said, "This is what it would be like with a small family." And this weekend, older daughter is away. I was definitely meant to be a kinder version of the little old lady in a shoe with scads of kids!!

What do your bathroom reno plans look like? Can you tell I'm inspired by bathroom makeovers?!

laura. It's a 1960 house with the standard shower over bath and awful brown-ish tile. I'd love a bigger British-length tub, but doubt we have room for it unless we start moving things around, which is likely too expensive. But I got a wonderful bathroom idea book from the library and decided we need a lighter tile, something pale gray and white with lots of silver. Although we have a 3/4 bath off our room, this is the centerpiece bath and I'd like it to be vaguely French-ish and lovely. I'm excited about it--something I'm sure you know about! I'd also like to re-do the tile in our en-suite which is an awful combination of grey and tan. Honestly, the people who built this house were oddballs. If we could do both more cheaply by doing them together, we might actually do both at once, Maybe.

Having a bathrm updated is a huge disruption and even a small upgrade makes a gigantic mess. They tape of the area but the dust participles attached everywhere. I hope you'll seriously negotiate for the best price of quality workmen whose work you've checked out for both bathrms. Seriously, you could put dental on a 0% CC in a worst case scenario. We see here the cost of materials and workers is going up really fast as the economy get back to average.

Hope your dental bill works out to be the reasonable one, but I'm with you...wouldn't believe it until it is actually true.

It sounds like the folks who built and decorated your house may have bought the stuff on the clearance rack! Weird colors! But then again, in the 60s, harvest gold, avocado, and browns were in.

Yeah, Rob, they are odd colors. This was a 1960 bathroom, so I think they had 1950s pastel hangovers, and it was before the later 1960s golds and browns. It's a shame about our ensuite since the floor is a perfectly acceptable pale grey, but the edging tile and shower are both this icky tan with flowers. They were oddballs. The basement wiring was horrible and the three car (!) detached garage had no electricity at all.

I hope the $500 estimate is correct!
