More Scrounging

August 17th, 2018 at 10:40 pm

Just got an e-mail from my adjunct job, and they've canceled the class that begins on 27 August. It's way underenrolled. Bleah. It will be fine, but we could use that paycheck this fall.

I need to think about some strategies to get through DH's unemployment more comfortably. He does have an interview next week, so fingers crossed for that.

    I agree, bleah.

Darn. That is disappointing considering the circumstances. I do hope that interview your husband has goes well. Side gigs or things you could sell to amount to what you may have received? I know you can make this work!

It does not seem fair that you were contracted to teach a class and then it gets cancelled. How do you deal with that uncertainty in terms of how to predict your income and ability to pay bills? I would find that aggravating.

Fingers crossed for DH on the job. They just cancel? Back when I was adjuncting, I was given the choice to cancel or to teach but for partial pay depending on enrollment. This was at a small private college though. I do NOT miss adjuncting especially as a sole source of income, which it was for me. I may go back and teach a class in the evening college one evening a week in a couple of years, but that would be on top of a full-time job and not in lieu of one!

The contracts for most of these adjunct jobs have the caveat about adequate enrollment. We do the same at my "big" university, except I have a tenure equivalent there so they always find work for me. I really get wound up when they want a lot of prep and a detailed syllabus ahead of time--and then cancel the class.
