Living on One Income

July 10th, 2008 at 02:16 am

Trying (and mostly succeeding) to live on one income while you're earning two is one of the smartest money decisions I've made .
DH all upset about something that happened at work and asked me tonight if we could live on what I make. Yeah, we could.
It wouldn't be pretty, and I'd be more maniacal than I am now about discounts and coupons and lights switched off, but I could hear him breathe a big sigh of relief.

Now if I could figure out how to pay for my mom's assisted living expenses.

Lovely double coupons today too along with free dishwasher additive at the local grocers, so I'm feeling pretty good.

Very true ... Sometimes just knowing that you can walk away any time you choose to makes it easier to deal with the crap at work which it turn might actually make one a better employee.

I agree with scfr, just knowing that he isn't chained to his job might make it easier for him to stick it out. When I played varsity sports, I used to get so upset at the politics of it and how I never got to do anything else, but my mom always told me I could/should quit... which made it easier for me to keep playing. If it had been the opposite, if someone had been telling me I couldn't quit, I would have wanted to much more.

I quit a very good job and month and 1/2 ago to stay at home and take care of my mom so she would not have to go to assisted living or a nursing home. It was not a tough choice for me. The only way that I was able to do it was to use my mother's SS and a wee bit of retirement that she gets to replace my take home pay. It has been difficult but very rewarding to be able to spend time with her. My job was in a way slowing killing me.

Amen! We've been living on one income even when there's two since we got married and it makes a world of difference.
