Mission Accomplished: The Mortgage

September 9th, 2012 at 03:54 am

Well folks, we're now officially debt free. We went to the credit union this morning and paid off the mortgage.

We were a bit giddy, and would have been a little disappointed if the teller hadn't shared our excitement. Turns out it was her first mortgage payoff--and she complimented us--saying how especially nice it was that "young folks like us" had their mortgage paid off. I think she misjudged our ages by half a decade at least.

I am grateful to my parents for being such careful stewards of their money and property. They both were Depression-reared and came from nothing. Both were raised by their moms alone--my dad's father dead from pneumonia at 37, and my mom's father left during the depression. But my mother particularly had a way with a dollar--stretching it beyond any of my poor powers.

The teller recommended a mortgage-burning party, but so many of our friends are so broke, it seems boastful. Instead I think we'll have a nice party without mentioning the event to them.

I guess I'd better update my sidebar!

    Congratulations, that's wonderful!

i enjoyed sharing my excitment with the teller, too. I didn't have a party, though I did share the news with a bunch of people in the ensuing weeks. Now, while I don't feel positively ebullient (I think I spelled that wrong), I do feel a certain "lightness of being."

    Party!!!

Most people these days plan to never be mortgage-free. I'm sure teller would say the same even knowing your age. Big Grin
I can't imagine anyone caring and celebrating even at age 50. Outside of SA, of course. Its a shame our culture is so unsupportive. such a milestone!!

Woohoo!! I am very excited for you. Hoping to do the same within 10 years. I know what you mean. When I bought my new car for cash, I don't mention it to many people and I haven't even told family members who live out of town that I bought the car.

Good on you! terrific to be mortgage free. What is your plan for these newly freed dollars? We used mortgage sums to develop our financial portfolio separate from retirement plan. It was shocking how fast these sums multiplied with Dollar Cost Averaging. Instead of paying out interest we were reaping benefits.

That is so great. A lot of people and even establishments are finding it hard to cope with our current economic instability. This tough time will pass and just like you many will conquer the adversities.

Well done! Our mortgage is the last debt we have, but we're soon to be in your situation, as well. The months are dragging by as I "can't wait" to make the next payment... until it is gone.

Congratulations! You're an inspiration to the rest of us who are still on the way to your destination.
