State Budget Woes Continue

March 2nd, 2011 at 05:49 am

I won't belabor the obvious for anyone who has been watching the news from Madison. Wisconsin.
Let's just say it sucks here right now.

I'm trying very hard to be positive about things, but please excuse me if I start getting snarky or glum.

On a more positive note, I guess, is the bagful of free toothpaste and vitamins and shampoo from Walgreen's today. I had a cheap and lovely lunch with an old friend. It's March 1. I collected a bunch of supplies for a homeless shelter's schoolroom. They're going to need all the help they can get in this environment. Tomorrow I'm taking Girl Scout cookies to my local firefighters who are supporting teachers and other state employees in this debacle.

This is an interesting piece about the current crisis here.

Now I'm having a big glass of wine and going to bed.
Sigh.

It is NO better here in IL except that our politicos still have their heads in.....the sand.

Think I need to consider moving to IN but doubt my house will sell in this market.

I have been saying for years now that some people wanted to outright close down public schools. I was thought I was exaggerating their position, but now, to my horror, I think I was more correct than I really thought. I had imagined that it might begin with repealing mandatory education laws, though I was, at the same time, sensing an attack on public employees bubbling up from the putrid, decaying intestines of some Beast of Control and Greed. I was caught by surprise at how fast the Intestine ruptured and spewed its filth. Habituating to the stink of Control and Greed, we do not even know how bad we smell.

I agree with the linked article. I am angry.

We were a homeschooling family (child now adult). But I fully support the mission of public schools. One reason we had to homeschool was because of the way, greed and racism left our schools in such a sorry state. But the answer is not to crush them, close them, and one way or another make sure that the funding winds up in the pockets of corporations. Nope.

It really is a fight for the future of America. Will we let non-millionaires have a voice through collective bargaining, or will we become a corporate oligarchy (even more than we already are)? I'm so nervous, and I'm sorry you're so close to the center of the struggle.

You women rock. You've cheered me up.
I've been loathe to bring this into my classroom, but many students have asked about it. My English majors are tuned in, and now, even my business majors are riled up. I'm going out on Saturday to see if I can help collect signatures to get my state senator recalled. She only won our district by 1000 votes, and I've got to do something or I'll need blood pressure meds.

This whole situation is just sickening and disheartening.
