A LIttle Civility, Please?

March 6th, 2011 at 10:50 pm

The political battle lines around Cheeseland seem to be making everyone edgy. I'm in a ongoing battle to stay positive and think and act thoughtfully about all this.

Today a volunteer came around with a petition to recall one of our state senators. I tried to get a petition myself yesterday, but the lines were overwhelming. I've contacted this senator's office numerous times--letters, phone calls, e-mails, and received no answer. I'm frustrated with that senator and the unwillingness to listen to the other side of the debate.

Anyway, the very polite young-ish man who came around had his children in a stroller with him, and I told him how happy I was to see him and support his petition. I was ready to send him away with a signature and a box of Girl Scout cookies when he told me the women across the street actually yelled at him and told him to get the hell off her property.

I am shocked and dismayed. This is a professional couple--she an attorney, he an accountant. We don't have much to do with them, except an occasional hello and help with the snow shoveling, but imagine swearing at a well-meaning (at worst) man with his children with him?

My bad angel wants to send my dog over to poop on her lawn, but thankfully, so far, my good angel has won out.

That's too bad. There's just so much misinformation being thrown around. Did you see the Daily Show segment where they showed the same talking heads who defended the Wall Street bonuses and went on about how $250K was barely above poverty level, then talking about teachers making $50K like they were cigar-chomping fat cats? But saying that bankers' compensation shouldn't be compromised because "keeping talent costs money." Oh, the talent that led the world into recession? But it's not important to keep talented teachers and govt workers? It really makes me sick to my stomach. And people buy it, as evidenced by your neighbor's behavior.

Encouragingly, though, a majority of people do support the concept of collective bargaining according to recent polling. Let's hope Gov. Walker really gets burned for overreaching like this.

Tee hee! Revenge would be sweet, but you did handle it the right way. Since you didn't witness it happening there isn't much you can do.

So far the good angel is still holding out--and so is the dog. There is so much misinformation being put out there, it's shameful. Fox "reported" from Madison showing the "unruly" protesters, but curiously there were palm trees in the background. I know Madison is southern Wisconsin, but believe me, we have no palm trees.

I saw that with the palm trees. I don't have cable, but saw it on internet, 15 seconds into the recording...I also have watched the Jon Stewart bit about six times now. Smile It really lifted my spirits and I keep going back to it for refreshment...Have you also seen the still photo of the young man in Egypt holding a sign that says, "Egypt Supports Wisconsin. One World, One Pain."?...Oh, then how 'bout this stupid claim that the state will need to spend $7,500,000 to clean up after the protesters in the state building?

Get this: the debate in Wisconsin made front page, top left in the Cambodia News ... which is an English language clip paper (no reporting, just collects clips from other newspapers). I saw the John Stewart clip that ceejay referred to. Go get 'em John!

Good on your good angel! As far as the palm trees are concerned, they don't call it Faux News for nothing.
