Wow!! We did stop off in Bath once for lunch, but I didn't get to see any of the namesake baths!

Yeah, CCF, they're all open to the air now as the Roman baths are something like 50 feet below the modern street level. The Romans built them over the only hot spring in Britain, combining their goddess Minerva with the local goddess Sulis. The had a huge temple complex, both hot and cold baths there as well as a sort of health spa. After the Romans left it got covered over and the forgot about. People still knew about the hot spring, but the Roman baths weren't rediscovered until 1880. In the 1720s workers building a street found a gold head of the goddess, and there are fabulous Roman ruins, curse tablets, burials, and all sorts of things there. My literature students went on a tour of the Pump Room upstairs where Jane Austen hung out. It's a very cool city.

Such a beautiful city. Just saw an interesting story about the architecture of the back of the Crescent - hint, not uniform at all :-) Enjoy your day trips - and your lovely photo has persuaded me we must visit it again when we go over to the UK for Christmas.
