Home Again

July 9th, 2009 at 12:00 am

We're home after almost three weeks in the UK. It was brilliant; the best weather we've ever had there for such a long stretch. We saw family and friends and did tons of great stuff from Charleston Farmhouse to Ben Franklin's House.

We did have a couple financial successes there. The nasty car rental folks tried to charge us 135 pounds for alleged "damage", but after complaining to the manager, it was all refunded. And I lost my digital camera on the car ferry, but it was returned! I can't say we pinched pennies (or pence) there, but we had a great great ime.

Most of the spending there went on DH's British credit card, but I'm home now spending for a friend's baby shower I'm having on Sunday and DD's birthday.

We've started getting bids on the basement remodeling, so that'll be interesting. The key question for us is whether to get a gas fireplace down there or not.

Frugality will return next week, for now I'm in party-planning mode.

Oh man, I've only rented a car in England once and it was a nasty experience too! My husband still had an unexpired UK license but not a U.S. one. Well once they found out the UK license didn't have his "current address" they said he couldn't rent the car! They were really rude and impatient too.

I had to rent the car because I had a U.S. license that matched my address, only I don't know how to drive stick, or on the lefthand side, or how to handle UK signs and roundabouts. I sat in the driver's side for about three minutes while hubby tried to give me a crash course in all of the above, before we decided "Screw it, nobody's looking, besides this is ludicrous and dangerous." He drove the whole vacation and everything was fine. We figured we could show his UK license if we got stopped and they wouldn't know about the rental debacle.

Renting a car overseas has been a hassle every single time. I don't think I paid the quoted price once, and constantly had to haggle.

It's just nastiness, I think. Some investigative journalist should do an expose on these car-rental ripoffs.
