Bagged

July 15th, 2008 at 01:40 am

This is a mini-rant about a spending choice I think is pretty darn ridiculous.
If you're a designer handbag freak, log off now.
As some of you know, I teach at a large public university. Almost every term for the past few years, I get a 20something female student who wants to talk to me about her cool designer handbag that cost her $300+. I have no idea why they want to talk to ME about this--maybe they think I need fashion help. Today a friend told me about her niece who is tens of thousands in debt yet prides her designer bags above all else.

Has the world gone nuts? I have my splurges, but they tend to be a pint of raspberries or a bottle of hand lotion that's more expensive than normal.

My first car cost less than their bags!

My purse cost $850.00. And I only use it for special occasions. I get to use it so rarely it still smells new! I'm just kidding. I cant keep a straight face at all. I am well aware of the people you talk about, but I am not one of them. To the disapointment of my fiance who wishes he had a surefire christmas gift for me every year.

I have a *gulp* designed bag - I love it - it is a Dooney & Bourke bucket bag that I got for Christmas a few years ago from DH and children. Confession: they bought me one that was $140 not on sale - after Christmas I found a similar (though not identical one) one the clearance rack for $108. I hadn't used the first one, returned it, and bought the second one. The funny thing is neither DH or children noticed the difference.

My purse cost me almost $30 and I have had it for over 10 years. I thought $30 was too much.

My partner loves handbags and wishes she could afford expensive ones. She did get a Kate Spade tote bag once, but deeply discounted through her work. Now she makes her own bags and purses out of thrift-store materials. Thank goodness she found a cheaper, more creative outlet for her obsession!

I spent $15 on my purse and I thought that would kill me lol... It's not quite working for summer though, so I've had my eyes open for something different at yard sales! I'll know it when I see it. I just need something to carry my stuff in - something practical.

i agree for the most part ... i think spending that much money consistently is absurd. however, now you knew there would be a however Smile ... i did purchase a $255 dooney&bourke handbag about three years ago. the only purse i have purchased in that three years. it has held up so well and i assume it will hold up for another three or four years. i would rather spend a larger sum for a better quality purse that will last longer than spending $10 a month for a poorly made bag.
