We're back from a few days in upper Michigan and Mackinac Island. I'm happy to report that I used all of last year's postcards, and we saved a few bucks by bringing water, and other beverages with us in our softside cooler to the hotel. But I've got to remember to pack a corkscrew and bottle opener regularly!
I can tell we don't eat out much by my reaction to restaurant prices. Man oh man, have things really gone up that much?
$10 sandwiches and $5 beers are a bit too much for me.
We had a great time though--I love the lake and it's so pretty there. DD rode along on the bike and the children's program at Fort Mackinac was splendid.
But now--alas--back to reality with meeting and the semester all starting this week. Time to ship the Amazon sales and the ebay sales.
Time to formulate my semester. Time to be a grown-up again.

Welcome back! Can you share what you did on vacation in the UP? My in-laws are moving there on 9/15 to outside of Iron River. I am wondering what to plan on doing when we visit there (we don't golf, ski, or gamble).

We were on the Lake Michigan shore most of the time, but I've found the Michigan tourist folks really helpful with coupons and suggestions. And you'd enjoy the beautiful fall colors there!

We aren't really the outdoor-sy type, but we do like biking and nature walks. Of course there is more to do than golf, ski or gamble (but my FIL loves the golf and gamble part!) I will have to investigate the Lake Michigan shore options. I am thinking on our first visit up there - 1/2 time with inlaws, 1/2 time sightseeing.

I think the Lake Michigan shoreline between Manistique and Mackinac is really pretty

I am not sure on where it is - I know that we drive through WI and go past Iron Mountain - so I think it is definitely closer to Lake Michigan than Lake Superior. I googled attractions and came up with Humungus Fungus Fest in Crystal Falls, MI in Aug (closer to where they will be) and lots of shipwreck-themed things (museums and glass bottom boat tours). I was thinking something happier - along the lines of Lighthouses!

Try http://www.upmichiganvacations.com
for some good suggestions. Also, if you get to Manistique, go down by the harbor to try The Upper Crust Deli and Bakery. They have spectacular views over the river and great great food.
It's hard to find but well worth it.
