For the past few years (oh man, nine years!) we've been making do with an IKEA dresser. I never liked it, but got a great offer on my antique dresser when we moved.
But we were both pretty tired of it, and DD has been putting up with the free dresser I trash picked and repainted before she was born. Her dresser is WAY too small for her, the drawers stick, and only about half her clothes fit into it.
That said, it was time for a dresser. I've looked, and looked, and looked some more at estate sales and resale shops, and two years ago found a new Amish-made dresser that I fell in love with. We have a short wall in our room which complicates finding the right size dresser too. We resisted the dresser for years, but as DD's clothes get bigger, so does the need for a new one. Today, I bought it. I found the same dresser cheaper at a different store, they did a pretty-good deal on it (after I said I'd think about it and suddenly $200 fell off the already discounted price). I'm thrilled and happy, and in four weeks DD will get our IKEA dresser and we'll have a wonderful cherry swoon-worthy new one.
I'm thrilled; truly thrilled.
Not Necessary, but Fabulous

When you change out dressers, rub a candle on the drawer edges that don't slide well.
What is your plan for DD's small dresser? Will you sell, donate or trash?

The highest quality piece of furniture in my house is a chest of drawers bought from a Disabled American Veterans ("Am Vets") charity store for $15. For $30 I could have gotten the matching dresser, but at the time, I did not think I could spare the $30. Wow, that gives me perspective on how far I've come.

I figure this will probably be the last bedroom dresser I buy for us. I still have my childhood dresser and desk.
DD's yucky small dresser will probably be freecycled. I considered using it as basement storage, but my husband suggested taking an axe to it. We're really sick of it. CB-- I feel your pain. Keep an eye out for one at sales--I think I just missed a great one at an estate sale last Thursday.
