Doing the Math(s)

We had a very happy time on our 16 days in England--four days in London, a week near DH's family in a National Trust cottage with friends and more time in places we'd never been--the Norfolk seafront towns and the old Suffolk wool towns. It was very fun--and very expensive. We did some budget smart things--packing snacks, utilizing the grocery stores, and only eating out once a day at most. But England is increasingly expensive, and the effects of the recession and inflation have also hit there. Tonight I'm going to do the math or maths( as DH would say) and figure out what we spent and the damage to the waistline!

Glad to be back on the budget program!
Not so glad it's as steamy as it is!

    I'm curious -- we probably won't go back until mid- to late next year (four full fares as AA will be 2 years old, gulp!) but it'll be instructive to know how it is right now.

    I wonder, ceejay, how the Olympics will affect prices? I did lots of research and plenty of negotiation with the London hotel. That hotel is a guilty pleasure for me, but they originally quoted me about 15% more than last year. Food prices are higher; an article in the Times said some things are up 15-20%. I didn't find them that much higher, but I thought restaurant prices were considerably higher than last year. One thing that might help you with airfare is that SOME airlines will charge you slightly less for a child's fare. Virgin was about $100 cheaper on DD's flight--and a couple years ago I booked through KLM (even though it was an NWA flight) and got a slightly cheaper rate for DD. Petrol prices are certainly higher this year--we paid 1.38(pounds) a litre for diesel--thankfully shaving 5p off with a Tesco voucher. There were tons of articles in the papers about waiting lists for garden allotments, and the announcement of significantly higher fuel prices for heating was met by all DH's relatives with a big sigh. Plenty of articles too on "fuel poverty"--defining it as spending 10% or more of a family's income on heat.

    Yes, pictures would be great. Glad you had a good trip, despite the high costs. All worth it, I'm sure.
