Kumon?

July 27th, 2011 at 02:49 pm

My fabulous DD is two grades ahead in reading, but has always struggled with her Math. My sister-in-law sent my nephew to Kumon for math help for a couple of years--and now he's graduating from engineering school. Has anyone out there used Kumon? Reactions?

I like their methods, but I'm not sure if it's worth the $100/month they're talking about.

Raining raining raining here. It's a happy peaceful sound!

I'm a math tutor and can tell you I know nothing of how Kumon works. I can tell you, however, that $100 per month for tutoring isn't bad if it means your child is going weekly. Just make sure that the tutor assigned to her gets what's going on with her and connects... and this should happen on the first or second visit. Otherwise, you might be wasting your money.

I agree with Snoopy. $100/month for math tutoring is not bad at all. I had a couple of students who went to Kumon and had good results. My mom charges $75/hour for her tutoring (only language arts/science/reading). If she could tutor math, she could (and would) charge more.

Thank you both for your help! We're going over there tonight to watch a session, but I think this is the way to go. I'll let you know how it goes!

So far, so good! We officially start on Monday, but the practice sessions last night seemed very helpful.
