The Best Compliment of the Day

January 12th, 2012 at 04:09 am

While DD was at her dance class, I zipped over to the library rather than sit with all the chattering moms. Sometimes I worry about my anti-socialness, but the few minutes I was there they spent talking about someone from a "Real Housewives" show--not quite my thing. But the library, just like when I was a geeky kid, was pure bliss. I got five new books, ordered two more, and at check out, the young library clerk who was somewhere around 20 looked over my selections and said, "I like your taste!" A kindred soul at the library!

I see they're forecasting snow tomorrow. Chicagoland Laura and CB: Any snow there yet?

Ooh that's special. I used to get that by the supermarket checkout or the video store, but not yet at the library... We might get snow this weekend.

There is snow in Iowa...and the winds are awful. It's below zero with the windchill this morning.

Snow is here 1.5 hours earlier than predicted, BRR! The 1st grader with great bliss told me he NEEDED his boots for recess. I said, "Nah, it isn't going to snow until AFTER lunch." Ha! He was right, good thing I sent him with his boots. Smile
I am right up there with you, sister. Opt out of the gab fest and head to the library! What did you get?

I got Per Petterson, a book on Americans in Paris under the Nazi occupation, a book I didn't finish last time called Mr Chartwell--about Churchill and depression and strangely enough--a big black dog. Also included was a vaguely trashy Philipa Gregory novel on Margaret Beaufort and the new book about Doc Holiday called Doc. The only problem is I don't want to work now, I just want to read.

I was given a copy of _Out Stealing Horses_ but I haven't looked at it yet. Still working on _Disappearing Spoon_, _Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter_, haven't touched _Gatsby's Girl_ yet.
I finished Gore Vidal's _Burr_ after Dickens' _Pickwick Papers_ (note to self: check pagelength before getting books from library!) and right now I just want to watch DVDs...

I just revisited The Beans of Egypt Maine by Carolyn Chute (I think that's her first name) and found it utterly depressing - first time around I liked it. Definitely need to broaden my reading horizons!

One of my coworkers lent me John Grisham's latest - The Litigators. I've just gotten started on it.

Btw- I like how you differentiate between the Laura's. Big Grin

Oooh, I love reading discussions. I loved _Out Stealing Horse_ but I am half Norwegian. Has anyone found a good Netflix series? Since I'm all the way through Mad Men, MI5, and Luther, I need something engrossing and well made. Someone recommended a British TV series called Survivors about a flu pandemic. Now even I'm not goofy enough to think it might be cheerful, but it was so violent, oddly written, and depressing, I gave up after three horrible episodes. Probably not ideal for Chicagoland Laura ;-) after all her kids have been sick!
