Party Planning

July 19th, 2013 at 03:05 pm

Tomorrow is the big party for DD and DH's birthdays. I think we're expecting around 35-40 folks so hoping the weather is cooler but pleasant. I'm making pulled pork sandwiches, half a dozen salads and sides, and a chocolate cake, lemon curd cupcakes, and maybe a fruit tart.

Our house painters left yesterday and did a spectacular job. I really liked them and their work ethic, especially in this heat.

I've started on the dressings but am off now to roast the corn for the corn and black bean salad. I'm never quite sure how much food to make, worry about not having enough, and end up with extras. I guess that's just the way it is!

On days like this, I wish I had another refrigerator. But since that only happens a couple times a year, I'll make do. Maybe my neighbors can chill some beverages? They are invited!

Better get going!

Pulled pork sandwich needs about 6 oz. per sandwich. Half the adults will eat one sandwich, half will have 1.5 sandwiches, teens can eat 2 easily. Pork butt cooks down quite a bit so I make one extra but only douse in BBQ sauce if I think I'm running out. If kiddies are young, I suggest 'slider' sized mini rolls and a dessert they can hold like decorated 'birthday' cookie.

Do you have coolers? Stick water bottles and adult beverages in one and use the other for kids bottled water and juices. Stick both of the coolers outside if the party is outside with a sign that says "kids drinks" "adult drinks". That might help. Cute tubs work good too. That keeps ppl from just opening your frige and helping themselves.

Thanks for the help! I've got coolers lined up, small kaiser rolls--and cupcakes. I'm never quite sure what to do about vegetarians--ceejay? I bought veggie dogs for veggies with kids, but the other salads, including a really nice warm bean salad are vegetarian-friendly dishes.

For some festive ice in the coolers fill baloons with water and freeze. Fun! Also saves making ice.
