Feast or Famine

August 27th, 2013 at 04:40 pm

While my evening tutoring gig is over, my new evening class started last night. I was slated for a class of seven, but only had five bodies in the room. One of those bodies was so attached to her phone that I predict I will hurl it against the wall by the end of the eight-week term. Three times last night I told her to put it away. Yes, these are college students.

The staff there is trying VERY hard to get me to do another tutoring gig a couple nights a week in addition to my class there. Yet with the regular university starting up, I really feel that I can't. My DD struggles with homework completion, and two nights a week is too much during the school year. And I can't get any of my university colleagues to take it either. It's not that we don't need the cash; we all do. But fall teaching is hard going. No one has time for an "extra" job, yet in the spring and summer, we all need the work.

Although it's very hot here, I'm finally getting that fall feeling.

Sounds wise to be there for your daughter. I agree that it feels like fall even though it is near 100 degrees! Next week will be cooler I think.

Tell the body attached to her phone "That better be the spirit of Northrop Frye or Hugh Kenner on the line. Anyone else isn't warranted for our class time."

Paulette! You said Northrop Frye. It just makes my close-reading heart glad.

Hello! I can't imagine how frustrating that must be for you to have someone disrespect you that way. On the other hand if you have clearly made it known that you don't want a phone engaged during class then I think you have met your obligation. If she's a college student and you are her prof I don't think you get paid to babysit her as well as educate her. Let her sink!

The phone problem is everywhere. I was in a boot camp work out class. We were lying on the steppers, doing abs stuff, and the lady next to me was just laying there looking around on her smart phone. Uh yeah. The teacher totally called her on it and made her do all the exercises while the rest of us stood and watched. She was horrified. She deserved it! Apparently the concept of "mindfullness" is lost these days.

During my regular (day) classes I gave them one warning, then they're absent for the day. Three absences and their grade drops. They try everything to outsmart me: phones on their lap in the back row, phones under their jackets, inside their sleeves. But really, who stares at their lap unless they're doing something they shouldn't?
The evening students have a long class, but if they have an emergency, they need to leave the room. I'm so fed up with it. They try to use it to cheat on quizzes. It's ridiculous.
