Started a New Class Tonight

And it looks like we'll have some whining issues. It must be awful to enroll in a literature class and find out you have to read some books. But we got through the first long sessions, and only have six left.

I spent only a bit this afternoon on my way to class--I needed to use an expiring Walgreen's voucher and bought some coffee with coupons.

I decluttered a bit, ridding myself of a big load of postcards for someone who collects them. I have lots to do tomorrow--some financial, some housekeeping.

    That's pretty funny! Both my daughter are taking British Lit next year; I'm the only one excited about it! I will readily admit to reading what my kids are, just so they can discuss things before getting to class. That might change with my own work load. What's your topic?

    Oh Geez! Yes reading books is necessary for a literature class. I sure hope those whining are English majors. My daughter's new student enrollment for college asked, "Do you enjoy reading outside of classroom material." Luckily she could answer yes. I raised children who love to read. Smile

    My overworked, under-rested daughter just tanked on a quiz in Honors English. Why? Instead of reading the actual chapter in Glass Castles, she opted for the summary of some online website. She at least concluded, "Well, that didn't work very well for me."

    Thank you for your understanding and humor. You'll like this bit. The class is called Bestsellers, and not an English major in the bunch--just a mandatory arts elective that they all think they can wiggle out of. But as we were discussing ways to keep book costs down by (shock, horror!) using library copies, a back row dweller asked if there were audio books. And there indeed are. On their break I heard one of them phoning home with the instructions to "get to XXX library right now and get me these audio books." We'll see how they do. And Laura, it's funny about the online summaries. I think I've read every Sparksnote summary ever written on the books I teach, and well, they're free for a reason.

    Really? You mean I actually have to READ in a college class - especially one about LITERATURE?

    I remember my sophomore year of college just *barely* making it into the Children's Lit class .. and only because they added a couple extra spots. I was SO excited ... because being in that class gave me access to the "special" section of the university library. Smile I think we had to read 100 children's lit books and write reviews/summaries on them as part of our grade. Ahh ... heaven ... Smile

    Teaching non-majors is always a challenge. Good thing you are armed with your sense of humor! (Summer school already there? Our local colleges just finished finals and have a week til summer session starts).
