August Spending is Ugly

July 28th, 2015 at 05:46 pm

I don't like our August spending. DH's tuition, home and car insurance, back to school spending, DH's annual life insurance are all due. It's always like this, and I'm always fretting about it. I think it's time to handle these big expenses differently. We have plenty of cash to cover them, but I need to face up to not being able to "cash flow" them.

Part of it is that DH objects to the extra couple of bucks it costs to pay the household insurance in more installments, but I'm switching it over to quarterly as we do with the car insurance. I know it's a psychological thing, but I hate taking money from savings to pay for this. I could set up a separate account, but honestly, for $3-4, quarterly makes me feel much better.

Now, over to the insurance website to handle that.

We save monthly for things like auto insurance, car registrations, and now renters insurance. Then the money is set aside and has been cash flowed through out the year. But I do understand your thinking and I'm glad it will work for you better this way!

That would be much better, but I'm happy enough to have it set on quarterly. I've paid it with the credit card, set on the day before it's due. And honestly, unless I point it out, DH will never notice it. He gives so little thought to money. Glad to have it done. I just started laughing when I wrote I thought I could cash flow it. Between the household insurance, DH's tuition and the car insurance, we wouldn't eat, drive, or use electricity all month.

I would imagine that all of those at once would be pretty difficult to cashflow. I do the same thing as CCF - save little bits each month to pay off when the bill comes.

I, too, get hit on the July/Aug cusp - home & auto insurance, local car registration + real estate taxes. I set up a separate savings account >10 years ago. Monthly I transfer 1/12 the previous year's bill + 5%.

Money on hand when needed but looks HORRIBLE to see the red ink in the month's spending dolumn.
