Study Abroad Changes

August 18th, 2016 at 06:37 pm

I spent yesterday with our Center for Intl Education. They've received the bad news that our academic department is no longer willing to pay faculty salaries when they teach studies abroad. This comes from all the budget cuts we've been faced with at the university. So, they'll need to raise costs to students, even though we teach courses in our subject area abroad, just as we would at home.

I spent some time brainstorming with them about how to cut costs. The drop in the exchange rate will help for now. But mostly I came away sad--sad that I can't go again for another fours years, sad that fewer students will be able to afford this, sad at the devaluing of university education into some sort of trade school.

I also came away determined to really stockpile cash and cut back--smarter spending on everything. My overflowing closets and cupboards are testimony to impulse buying. I've become so much better, but we still have so much excess.

That is very sad! Good luck with the stockpiling of cash and release of the old stuff.

They'll send you every four years now? What a bummer. Hopefully your family will be able to go more often than that?

So sorry things are being cut at the university. Quality education isn't cheap.

ceejay--I've just committed to not going until DD is out of high school. We need my regular salary and they need me home. DH is going for a wedding in October, and we'll try to do a long stretch next summer.

MEC are you a free agent able to teach summer school courses at any college or University in London/commuting distance? What direct exchanges might be available? What personal contract? I've always had the impression that our specific faculty participates in these programs to promote our attending offers opportunities to meet colleagues who can outline their summer offerings. Something may click, someone identifies as willing to promote your CV.

'Overflowing closets....' I've done the Marie Condo life changing magic of tidying up 'festival' and found it remarkably beneficial. I am repeating the process this week for the self fulfilling benefits [and take my mind of more medical issues] The books are available at the library or audio and endless condensed, personal experiences on You Tube.

If your city participates in the International Education dog and pony shows to recruit and promote International education programs you might find those contacts helpful. Something may click, someone identifies as willing to promote your CV

Snafu--I am going to look for some summer opps. The company that runs our program offers programs all over the world, and I've been thinking of doing an Irish one for a long time. Yep--there is going to be a big sweep here soon. I've been buried in accuracy checking and copy editing a textbook, but I foresee a giant purge.

That is rotten news - both for you and the students.
