About to Throw in the UF Towel for the Month

July 11th, 2017 at 10:34 pm

Sunday our basement dehumidfier failed. From my google of the serial number, it appears to be 37-years-old and was here when we bought the house. We tried a bunch of fixes, but it was a goner. Also a goner was the $179 paid for a new one.

And then DD's birthday--not lavish, just an ice cream cake and pizzas for her party. And I may've bought some patio lights at Amazon today for Friday's party. And we took her out to dinner last night and there were a few books and some cash.

And I bought some theatre tickets for London, and had a bra fitting, and bought an expensive bra there. I could go on, but it's just the wrong month for me to be UF. My next best shot is October or November. Better to be just sensible, not frustrated, and have fun.

Uh, 37 years is an amazing run for a dehumidifier!

Wow, 37 years for any appliance is nothing short of amazing.

Yes, sensible is good. You can just watch things closely instead of being UF.

37 Years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't of anything that lasts 37 years anymore....And please don't throw in the towel.....I have spent $258.14 frivolously thus far in July and we are only 11 days in! Shame on me. But I never, never, never give up! I can squeeze a few more NSD's out this month and know that it could have been worse than it is/was. It's very hard for me to not spend anything in a day. But I'll tell you what, I don't drink outside of social gatherings, I don't smoke, I don't go "out with the guys", I don't need any "toys", I don't have Golf night or Softball night and I don't waste money on some of the vices I see controlling the lives of others. It could be worse. It really could be. Tomorrow is a brand new day! Hit the reset button and bear down!

Hearing your story about the 37 year old dehumidifier dying reminds me of March this year on a day when it was 36 degrees outside. Our more than 20 years old furnace (we are not really sure how old it was, but that's a guess) decided to die. We also knew that the a/c (more than 40 years old!!) was also about to keel over. We got a quote to replace both at the same time. It was surprisingly not as expensive as we thought it would be, but we are still paying it off. I would not beat yourself up over replacing a dehumidifier that you had no way to know it would stop working. That's just life. It happens. That's what emergency funds are for. Happy birthday to your daughter.

I know--that's quite a longevity record for that beast. It weighs a ton, and I had a heckuva time getting it out of the basement. We have not gone crazy with cash, but it seems to be flying out of here. Yet tonight was a collection of leftovers and CSA veggies, and tomorrow will be an equally frugal grilled cheese sandwiches. I'll be careful, but only a billionaire would describe us as uber-frugal this month. In other bad news, however, my DH has lost his headphones. I'll give it a few days to see if they surface before buying a replacement set. He uses them for teleconferencing as well as recreational listening.
