Aldi Advice?

February 5th, 2020 at 02:21 am

A brand-new Aldi opened near us last week. What do you like best/least at Aldi? I've occasionally shopped Aldi before but now it's on my regular route home. I'm mostly a Costco/local grocer shopper, so curious about Aldi favs.

My NS streak has ended with a haircut and some greeting cards purchased. I normally don't buy many cards, but some of these were for folks who needed some cheering up, and a cute one for my BF's birthday.

A surprise $20 check arrived in the mail from a survey I took somewhere. I hope to get it into my Big Goal fund.

As with any store, compare prices and try their brands. I haven’t been there lately but I know their oatmeal was cheaper. So are strawberries especially when they’re on sale. We never found much there that we liked so hardly ever bother going.

I shop there a lot. I like their artisan lettuce, "Boomer" potatoes (very small Yukon Gold), thick-sliced bacon, Irish butter, maple syrup, premium ice cream, and rising crust pizza. On most staples, their prices cannot be beat, at least in my area. I do find that a lot of their produce is not up to par, but that might just be at my Aldi, because I have heard others like the produce.

We go to Aldi first and then Kroger. We have found good deals on dairy, eggs, and fresh fruits and vegetables. We also buy chicken (Organic) as well as the pork loin roasts and have been very satisfied and the prices on these items are far cheaper than Kroger. Our local dairy here is Prairie Farms and we were surprised one day to see a Prairie Farms truck pulling into unload. The name of their dairy products is "Friendly Farms" so we figure they are the same items, just under another name.

Most of the produce at our Aldi is very fresh. There are times when it isn't, but that can happen at any grocery, I guess.

Aldi is my main grocery store. My usual buys - spinach, butter lettuce, garden salad, sweet potatoes, bell peppers, cucumber, mushrooms, dried beans, vegetable broth, brown rice spaghetti, individual guac cups, multiple bags of frozen veggies in steamable bags, etc.

Then there are the Aldi finds ... things that you hope you don't like too much, because they'll be gone without notice. Frown For awhile they had these noodle bowls which were the perfect size for a quick meal. There's also the Aldi brand peanut butter cups which come and go. They have a decent selection of vegetarian/vegan foods off and on. (I'd just tried their non-dairy yogurt and liked it - then two weeks later - Poof!)

Then of course there is the aisle of shame. In other words ... you walk down that aisle and find loads of things you didn't realize you needed until you saw it there. It's a quite eclectic aisle. You might find bedding, toys, gardening supplies, clothing/shoes, cooking equipment, printers, organizational stuff, etc. etc. etc. I usually try to avoid that aisle ... Smile
