Looking for Oomph

June 23rd, 2020 at 01:52 pm

I'm am certainly in need of some oomph. While I'm getting some things done, I am certainly lacking focus. I've always been a person who works better with fewer distractions, and the distractions of the house are starting to erode my focus- along with all the underlying issues going on in the world. But I guess all you can do is keep on keeping on.

I made a list last night that includes a walk, the treadmill, a visit to a framing shop, and the garden center as well as several hours of work. I bought gas and dog food as well as posted DD's British passport application. We also went to the very empty library where I was impressed by their protocols. It was great to get new books which I hope will improve my focus. Laundry done too as well as a new dish--kohlrabi fritters. What to try today? Oomph updates as we go.

I am missing some oomph as well. Let me know where you find some!

Sounds like the library visit was great. I know I enjoyed going this week too. They had curbside pick up a couple of weeks before and although I was happy to get new books to read, I missed the pleasure of looking myself.

I think the hardest thing for us is to get back to a schedule and there were days when we were kind of lost. We had to rework a schedule of sorts and that has helped.

This might sound stupid but I downloaded a habit/goal tracker app to my phone. I set tasks either daily or weekly and check them off, and the tracker reminds me if I don't. At first I was very specific about what I wanted to do every day (strength training, guitar practice etc.) but I started to feel hemmed in by that so I gradually made it more flexible until it's "something active" and "something creative" 9 times per week and one day per week with no drinking. But you can track up to 7 habits and make your own custom ones or use the ones in the app.

I think you can also set one-off goals that you check off by percentage complete. I was more going for ongoing habits but I think there are other ways to use the app.

It's easy to lose motivation (and track of time) these days, so this keeps me from slipping too far into a malaise.

Oh and I want to hear how the kohlrabi fritters work out! We're getting one in our CSA this week and I never know what to do with them. I haven't found a standout use like I have most other veggies.
